I will remember

That Abe Lincoln was a great man who helped to end slavery. If he never succeded in policics we might still have slavery today. Luckily he was there and ready to become the president during a time that states thought it was ok to leave the country. My only question is if the Confederacy wasnt part of the Union did he really have the right to abolish slavery there? Couldnt they say no?

Alyssa,

That is an excellent question. You should read the wikipedia.org entry on the Emancipation Proclaimation. I learned that the initial freeing of the slaves was a war proclaimation and not a law. And, it only pretained to those slaves in the South. What else interests you about this? After reading more do you think Lincoln could legally free the slaves in the south?
